THE HISTORY OF THE MILE HIGH ZOMBIES
- The Zombies are formed by Cesare Merriman and John Tolmich. Both had played together in the NABA in 1996 for the Hornets, led by Dave Nolan, manager. Taking the field in the inaugural red and black, the Zombies assemble a group of softball players and go on to a 2nd place 9-7 finish, only to be eliminated in the second round of the playoffs by the Bombers. |
- The Zombies struggle to consistently field 9 players, and end the season with a dismal 5-12 record. With a team ERA of 10.09, and scoring an average of 9.06 runs per game, it's easy to see that those numbers do not add up to a winning season. |
- In a mid-season effort to improve their place in the standings, the Zombies sign two players from the now-defunct Canes, the 1999 18A Champions. The Zombies prove to need time to gel as a team, and finish 11-9, a definite improvement over the 1999 season. |
- The Zombies turn in another direction altogether in 2001. The Zombies scrap the red uniforms and convert to black and green. The Zombies also change things up with the addition of a non-playing manager, Larry Seres, Sr. This proves to be the worst decision in Zombies history, with the manager and two players walking off the field during the 4th inning of the July 29th game against the Colt 45s, forcing the Zombies into a forfeit loss. The Zombies, in an attempt to recover from the managerial drama, struggle to field 9 players from that point on, and finish 10-6. |
- Both players and management are so disappointed from the outcome of the preceding season, the Zombies opt not to field a team in 2002. |
- The Zombies begin to assemble a new squad, and a new group of core players takes form. With the addition of key pitching, the Zombies, once again, take the field, seeking a championship. They fall short, however, by losing several close games. Player suspensions, injuries, timely errors, and a season sweep by the Elites result in a 7-7 finish, and the Zombies do not make the playoffs. |
- The cursed Zombies, with another change of uniforms, take the field with hopes of an 18A championship. With the addition of a few integral players, the Zombies have already improved on the previous season. For the first time, the Zombies are truly a team of individuals that come to play. The Zombies begin the season undefeated through 14 games and clinch first place with three games remaining. The Zombies complete the regular season at 17-2 and win the championship with a 20-7 victory against the Cardinals. |
- The Zombies move up from 18A to AA in hopes to win back-to-back championships in different divisions. It doesn't take long to realize that things are different than last year, losing their opener to the Colt 45's, and would later hand the Colt 45's the second of their two wins for the season. The Zombies play in their first Mile High Tournament and finish with a 1-3 record, playing well, but losing two games by one run. The Zombies continue to make roster changes all season, but fail to gel as a unit. Struggling to make the final playoff seed, the Zombies are eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. Overall record: 9-11-1 |
- Disappointed by the league's inability to fill an 18Wood division, the Zombies take the final position in 18AA. The Zombies struggle to stay focused for an entire 9-inning time span, and finish a dismal 5-11-2. Yes, two ties. Both games that the Zombies should have won. The Zombies prove that winning with a cancer on the roster is impossible. The Zombies fail to qualify for post-season play. |
- Retrieving a Zombies Hall of Famer and acquiring several key players, the Zombies take the field with their most talented roster in franchise history. The team shows no weak positions prior to the season opener, and gel well as a team. The Zombies look to take the 18Wood division by storm, and do so with an overall 20-1 record. The Zombies see their first no-hitter, thrown by Kyle Weber against the Brewers. During the playoffs, the Zombies 1-hit the Black Sox in round 1, before beating the Thunder 5-1 in the Championship Game. |
- The Zombies prove the move from 18Wood to 18AAA to be too formidable of a task, and complete the season 2-15. With 17 players on the roster, the Zombies often struggle to field 9. The 2008 campaign turns out to feel more like a job than a hobby, and a major organizational restructure is due for 2009. With three sponsors in tow, the Zombies' black era begins. |
- The Zombies begin the season after undergoing a complete roster overhaul during the off season, with both the roster and the uniform taking on major changes. With only 3 players returning from the previous year, the Zombies are able to field a solid core of players on which to build over the coming years. The 2009 season, however, proves to be a true rebuilding year, with the Zombies finishing 6-11, and missing the 4th and final playoff seed by 2 games. |
- The Zombies return for the 2010 campaign with 10 returning players from 2009. With additions to the pitching staff and depth behind the plate, the Zombies look to hit the ground running toward a winning season and have high hopes for playing in the postseason for the first time in 3 years. After ending the regular season with an 8-10 record, the Zombies advance beyond the first round of the playoffs, only to fall short of reaching the championship game by one run, losing to the Braves 11-10 in a heartbreaker. |
- The Zombies are back in 18W with the core team from 2010 returning. With three solid additions, the Zombies look to make the playoffs for the second year running. With the goal for the 2011 season to finish above .500, the Zombies complete the regular season 8-7-3, above .500 for the first time since 2007. Unfortunately, the Zombies play the #1 seed in the playoffs and are eliminated in the first round, despite a stellar pitching performance. |
- The Zombies make a division change for the first time since 2009, moving to the 25-and-over 25A division. With a 2012 goal of advancing beyond the first round of the playoffs, the Zombies finish the regular season 12-3-2, taking down the undefeated Juice in the season finale, 13-4. The Zombies fail to make it to the championship game, however, losing a stunner to the Yetis, 11-9. |
- The Zombies return to the 25-wood division with the motive of returning to the post-season for the third year in a row. With late 2012 roster changes now solidified for the 2013 campaign, the Zombies fill a couple of gaps and take the field on opening day with one of the deepest rosters in the Zombies 15 year history. The Zombies finish the regular season 14-2-2 as the #1 seed and advance to the Championship game. Unfortunately, the Zombies lose a heartbreaker to the Yetis 8-4 and settle for runner-up. |

- The Zombies begin the 2014 season 0-4, the worst start in franchise history. Thank goodness the Zombies face the Harvesters in week 5. The Zombies struggle to get up to .500, and finish a dismal 4-9-1, ending the season with a 12-12 tie with the Cutthroats, a team who, up through 2014, failed to beat the Zombies. |
- The Zombies return for the 2015 campaign with many of the core players from 2014. With the addition of a couple position players, the Zombies look to rebound from the 2014 season and compete for a playoff spot. The Zombies, however, finish 7-8 with 6 of those losses by a margin of 2 runs or less. The Zombies fail to make the playoffs and can only look ahead to 2016. |

- Just when the Zombies look as though they're ready to move to the 35+ division, a few new players come along that require the Zombies to remain in the 25 Wood division. The Zombies get off to a slow start, but become the team to beat in August. The Zombies end the regular season 10-7, but fall 5 runs short of making the Championship Game, losing to the Tribe 14-9. |
- The Zombies begin somewhat of a rebuilding effort with the largest Opening Day roster on record - 18 players. The Zombies welcome back a couple of players that have been gone from the team for a few years, including the only pitcher to throw a no-hitter for the Mile High Zombies. The team also marks the 20th season with yet another change in colors. Early in the season, the Zombies lose 5 in a row, putting them as low as 7th place. Down the stretch, the Zombies win 4 in a row, but come up short in their bid for the fourth playoff seed. |
- The Zombies take the field in 2018 with only a couple new faces on the roster. The Zombies continue to battle in the 25+ division, even though most of the roster qualifies for 35+. The Zombies ultimately run short on pitching arms during the season, and finish the regular season 7-9. That record proves to be good enough to secure a playoff spot, but the Zombies drop a heartbreaker to the Sentinels in the first round of the playoffs 11-9. |
- Beginning their 22nd year in the Denver NABA, the Zombies make the move to 35+ for the 2019 season. With 8 returning players, 2 players from 2017, and 4 new players, the Zombies look to take the older division by storm. That's not exactly how the season plays out, with the Zombies failing to string together two consecutive wins all season. They finish the season 5-12, which includes two forfeit losses. |
- The entire league gets a late start to the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the Zombies take the field in 2020 sporting new uniforms. Additions to the roster include a few ex-Zombies - AJ Lomack, Quincy Hudspeth and John Whittiker. Whittiker and Hudspeth quit the team by game 3, citing schedule conflicts, while another Zombies vet joins the team - Sean Davis. Also of note, the 35+ league has been divided into two divisions, giving the Zombies a better chance at claiming a playoff birth in the Fall. The Zombies perform well all season, ending the regular season with a first place record of 13-3, and advancing to the Championship Game, where they are dismissed by the Cannons 10-2. |
- The Zombies take the field on Opening Day with their focus on a championship season, winning 7 of their first 8 games, sweeping season series against the Predators, Yetis and Royals. The Zombies finish the regular season with a 12-3 record, but make a quick exit in the playoffs, getting beat by the Reds 10-7 in round 1. The Zombies do, however, find some new players to augment the late-season roster that should bolster the lineup in 2022. |
- The Zombies step onto the field for their 25th Opening Day on April 3, 2022. The goal: Bring a 3rd championship to Zombietown. The Zombies go on a 10-game winning streak to finish the regular season with a record of 12-3-1, but make a quick exit in round one of the playoffs, getting eliminated by Loc Nar by a score of 24-17. |
- The Zombies enter this season with another uniform change, as the orange era comes to a close. With a couple subtractions and a few additions to the roster, the Zombies look good to place in the top half of the NABA 35+ division, at least on paper, even with a lopsided schedule released by the league. Through the work of old faithful pitching mixed with a little new pitching, the Zombies finish the regular season in 4th place. They defeat Loc Nar in round 1 of the playoffs by a score of 5-2, but fall to the Rockies in round two in a 13-inning battle royal by a score of 12-11. |

- The Zombies are back to play in the 35+ division, and what the division structure will be is anyone's guess. With the loss of a few key players for 2024, the Zombies have some recruiting to do in the off season. First, the signing of a new player to fill a n OF personnel gap. Second, the Zombies sign an OG player who last played with the team in 2008, and who was on the roster for both the 2004 and 2007 Championship teams. |
